Radical Hospitality

"Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action." 1 John 2:25

Arrived in D.C. late Sunday evening to discover that my housing situation was in a little bit of limbo. First the front desk had my name recorded as "Korean Robbins" now the Korean part didn't really bother me--but "come on everybody, it's robins like the bird!" So stemming, I assume, from this awkward name miscommunication I was assumed to be a man. Ouch! In attempting to fix it, I ended up in a Satan's armpit (a.k.a. no AC), so the organization offered to put me up in a hotel. FABULOUS! Another night with the family, and a free continental breakfast (they had belgium waffles--someone upstairs was looking out for me). Monday morning, Mom, Dad, and Kelsi bid me farewell, and I was left with a car full of business suits and diet mountain dew. I got word that I would need to stay another night in the hotel, and then GOD stepped in big time.

Two of the most wonderful, descent, authentic people I know responded to a message I had sent them letting them know I was in D.C. and was staying in a hotel for the evening. I knew Julie M. and Daniel were living in D.C. for the summer, but I never expected their amazing expression of hospitality toward me. Upon hearing of my situation, they insisted that I stay at their summer home less than a mile from my Field Placement office. This morning I walked to the Capitol--too cool for school kids! If that wasn't incredible enough they provided me with meals from the moment I arrived. It gets more incredible-in order to prevent me from having to pay for parking at my current residence, they offered to drive me to my apartment, helped me move my belongings in, and then drove my car back to there home for the rest of the week. Julie also packed me dinner, and then after discovering that they serendipitously are going down to Newport News this weekend for a conference, they offered to take me back to D.C. with them Sunday afternoon so my mom won't have to drive me up and herself back.
As I write this entry, I stand amazed at how God works in and touches our lives through the generosity of people. When individuals extend radical hospitality to others it truly reflects a manifestation of God's kingdom on earth, and I have experienced that in a real and tangible way over the last two days. It is my prayer and desire to be able to extend that kind of hospitality to the many friends and strangers I will encounter throughout my ministry. This is my first blog entry ever and I am really not sure how to write one of these things, but I know I want to remember this moment, and I want to take a moment to praise God for the incredible way in which God intercedes for us in unexpected ways. I didn't even know how much I missed Julie and Daniel until I was with them again. Thank you both for existing--you may not know this but you have truly revealed the face/love of Jesus to me through your actions and for that I am eternally grateful--I will never forget it. Love in Christ.
